Homeowners warned of freezing pipes
A number of insurers have warned property owners about the dangers
of freezing pipes over the Christmas period.
More Th>n, esure and Aviva have all issued advice ahead of a
cold snap expected later in December.
According to the insurance providers, water damage resulting from
frozen and burst pipes is often a problem during the festive season
as many people spend time away from their homes.
Suggestions on how to prevent the problem from More Th>n
included leaving the heating system set to no lower than ten
degrees C and programming the heating to come on for a short time
each day to keep the water circulating.
Additionally, esure recommended that homeowners could turn the
stopcock off during their Christmas break as this will reduce the
amount of damage should a pipe burst.
Gordon Hannah, director of claims at esure, commented: "Many people
think that they can't turn the stopcock off and leave the heating
on but usually this is fine to do and it will completely prevent
the source of water that can wreck a house."
